Description

The Post Office at 12 Windsor Place in Portobello, Edinburgh, is a two-storey, four-bay neo-Jacobean building designed by W. Robertson in 1904. It features stugged grey ashlar with red sandstone dressings, including flush quoining around the openings and to define the walls, and is harled on the northern elevation. The base course is also present.

The principal elevation is asymmetrical, with the first-floor bays in the center slightly advanced from the bay to the right, while the bay to the left is set at a slight angle and recessed. The ground floor has bipartite windows with moulded architraves in the central bays, and a moulded string course acts as a running corbel for the upper storey. The first-floor windows have chamfered margins and are adorned with strap work above. The letters "ER" and the year "1904" are carved on the left and right sides, respectively. A bipartite window on the ground floor of the right bay, also with chamfered margins, breaks through the eaves course at the first floor and is set within a broken attenuated semicircular pediment topped with an obelisk. The corner at the ground level is rounded, supported by a corbel stone at the first floor. The first floor of the left bay is battered in, and there is a two-leaf panelled door at the ground level with an ornate doorpiece and a moulded architrave, featuring "Post office" carved on the lintel. This door is topped by a swan neck pediment flanked by obelisks, and a stained glass window is centered within a columned surround that is cut through by a broken pediment, complete with a keystone that has a number carved into it. A window is also present at the first floor, and the roofline features a coped parapet with a section at the center that is advanced and supported by a series of corbels.

The rear elevation was not seen during the last inspection in 1994. The building has timber sash and case windows, with 6-pane upper sections and plate glass in the lower sections, as well as 4-pane upper sections and plate glass throughout. The roof is slate, with crow-stepped gables above the two central bays on the principal elevation and the southern elevation. The stacks are made of stugged ashlar and polished red sandstone with coped tops.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1994.
