Description

The Airdrie Public Library, designed by J M Arthur in 1924, is a two-storey, seven-bay building with a rectangular plan and a severe classical style. It features a prominent entrance bay with a giant order. The exterior is constructed from cream ashlar sandstone with a grey granite base course and has channelled quoins. Additional architectural details include a base course, a dividing band between the first and second storeys, a broad eaves course, a cornice, and a blocking course.

On the principal elevation, the entrance bay is slightly advanced and features a granite hoodmould above a two-leaf timber panelled door. There is a plinth above the door and a recessed bay with a tall, bipartite stained glass window at the centre, flanked by engaged Doric columns in antis. The eaves entablature of the central bay terminates in a blocked parapet, and the outer bays have regular fenestration.

The rear of the library includes a two-storey, five-bay rectangular-plan addition that is harled, along with a further two-storey, two-bay gabled block. The south side elevation has two bays with regular fenestration, while the north side elevation mirrors the south.

The building features multi-pane steel-framed windows with top hoppers and has a low hipped roof covered in grey slates with lead flashing. The interior was not seen in 2001.
