Description

16 and 18 North Bridge Street in Airdrie is a classical office building designed by George Arthur and completed in 1893. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure with a rectangular plan and a symmetrical facade, constructed from red sandstone ashlar. The building features a base course, a dividing band between the ground and upper storey, continuous cill courses, a pulvinated eaves course, a projecting cornice, and a balustraded parapet. The openings are adorned with moulded architraves.

On the principal (west) elevation, there are paired semicircular-arched windows in the center bay, framed by a channelled ashlar surround. Tuscan columns support an entablature that flanks a semicircular-arched doorway in the outer bays; the left bay is blind, while the right bay features a timber panelled door and fanlight. The upper storey has a canted, stone mullioned, corbelled oriel window in the center, with single windows in the flanking bays. The parapet has a canted blocking course in the center, blind arcading, and a consoled panel with a carved scallop and a pediment above it.

The east (rear) elevation was not visible in 2001. The north (side) elevation has five bays, with the gable end extended to the right. The ashlar continues from the west elevation to the outer right bay, while the rest of the elevation has irregular fenestration. The south (side) elevation is obscured by an adjoining building.

The windows are plate glass timber sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slates and lead flashing, and there are coped gable stacks. The interior was refitted in the 1970s by Monklands District Council to serve as the Parochial Board offices.
