Description

8 East High Street in Airdrie is a classical tenement building dating from around 1840. It is two stories tall and has a rectangular plan with a gabled roof. The building features nine bays and includes shops on the ground floor. The exterior is made of yellow ashlar sandstone, which is channelled at the ground level. Notable architectural details include a base course, a dividing band between the first and second stories, an eaves course, a projecting cornice, and a blocking course. The upper storey windows have shouldered moulded architraves.

On the northwest (principal) elevation, the upper storey displays regular fenestration. The ground floor features a symmetrical three-bay shop front on the far left, a panelled door in the fourth bay, an asymmetrical shop front in the fifth and sixth bays, and a panelled door with a projecting keystone in the sixth bay. There is also a two-bay asymmetrical shop front on the outer right.

The southeast (rear) elevation is not visible, and the northeast and southwest (side) elevations are obscured by adjoining buildings.

Inside, the ground floor has modern shop fittings, while the tenements on the upper floor were not seen during the last inspection in 2001. The upper storey is fitted with 12-pane sash and case windows, while the ground floor has plate glass windows. The roof is covered with grey slates and features lead flashing, broad coped gable stacks, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
