Description

Gamble Halls, located on Shore Street in Gourock, is a public hall and former library built between 1874 and 1876. This two-storey, five-bay building features Italianate architectural details and is set into a sloping site. The exterior is constructed of yellow sandstone with an ashlar front, stugged ashlar on the northwest elevation, and coursed and squared pink rubble at the rear. It includes a base course, a band course above the ground floor, a cill course at the first floor, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course. The ground floor has architraved and corniced windows with bracketed cills, while the first floor features round-arched windows with moulded heads and an impost course.

On the northeast (front) elevation, there is a raised doorway at the center with modern steps, which is round-arched and cavetto-moulded, topped with a modern shield in the fanlight. This entrance is framed by a Roman Doric porch with columns that have egg and dart cornices and a pierced balustrade surrounding a heraldic shield. Flanking the doorway are single windows, and there are additional windows at the first floor.

The northwest (King Street) elevation consists of eight bays with rounded reveals on the ground floor windows. It features a plain band and cill courses at the first floor, regular fenestration, and a secondary doorway located in the third bay from the left. A corniced window is present in the sixth bay.

The southeast (rear) elevation includes a fire escape stair and round-arched windows at the first floor, with irregular openings below. The building has timber sash and case windows, with plate glass glazing at the front and four-pane glazing at the rear. The roof is piended slate with metal flashings and metal flues at the ridge. The interior was not seen in 1993.
