Description
- 3-storey and basement Glasgow-style block of corner tenements with shops at ground floor, former Co-operative building. Red sandstone, ashlar front, coursed rubble and harl to rear and sides. Cill course at 1st and 2nd floor; eaves cornice and tall pierced parapet; ashlar mullions and transoms; 2nd and 3rd floor windows set in shallow recessed panels; carved cartouche panels dividing bays.
NE (SHORE STREET) ELEVATION: 4-bay including projecting chamfered corner bay to outer right, corbelled above corner doorway, carved tablet with shaking hands and tree motif in laurel wreaths above, bipartite windows and lugged pediment breaking eaves. Single and tripartite windows to centre bays. 3-storey canted bay corbelled
above ground floor. Shopfronts mostly altered, rounded ingoes surviving at No 89, No 90 tiled doorway (painted over), boxed-in fascias.
SE (JOHN STREET) ELEVATION: 3-bay return of corner tenement with canted window as above to centre bay flanked by bipartite windows. Round-arched and keystoned semicircular doorway to left bay with transomed double inner door; small tripartite to centre; shopfront to right bay. No 4, 3-bay tenement; centre bay with roll-moulded
doorway flanked by window with carved roundel above and set in corniced panel, bipartite and tall transomed bipartite stair windows above. Paired windows to outer bays; 2-storey canted oriels corbelled above.
NW ELEVATION: gabled.
SW ELEVATION: as above.
Some timber sash and case windows with plate glass glazing, small-pane windows to stair windows. Slate roof; gablehead stacks to NW and SE, 2 tall coped wallhead stacks to SE, mutual stacks.
INTERIOR: common stairs with cream, black and green tiled closes and stairs with decorative iron railings and turned timber newel posts.
