Description
219-223 High Street in Burntisland is a late 19th-century, three-storey tenement building with an attic and two bays, featuring shops on the ground floor. The exterior is made of ashlar stone, with a base course and band courses between the floors, and a moulded design over the first floor that matches the adjacent building at Nos 213-217. The windows have architraves and stone mullions.
On the south elevation facing High Street, the original shop fronts at ground level have moulded basket-arched openings and a continuous fascia above. The shop on the right has a central door flanked by display windows and a retractable canopy. The shop on the left features a central display window with the proprietor's name etched into the glass, a deeply recessed shop door to the right with decoration and the proprietor's name also etched into the glass, along with "Established 1896" in the fanlight. There is a panelled tenement door to the left. The first and second floors have a canted window on the right and bipartite windows on the left, topped by a tall timber-framed, pedimented dormer window that is glazed on the sides and front, located over the right bay.
The ground floor has fixed display windows, while the first floor features uPVC windows. The second floor has plate glass glazing in sash and case windows, and the dormer contains casement windows with a small-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates and has coped ashlar stacks with some chimney cans.
Inside, the shop at No 219, James Ferguson & Son, boasts ornate cornicing and ceiling decoration.
