Description

Old Gourock Parish Church, located on Royal Street in Gourock, was built between 1832 and 1833, with enlargements made in 1872 and 1900. This rectangular-plan preaching box features a battlemented gothic front and a square tower at the northeast corner. The front is made of pink sandstone ashlar, while the rear and sides are constructed from coursed and squared rubble.

The northeast elevation has a base course that is rock-faced at the tower, with chamfered reveals and hoodmoulded openings. It is topped with crenellated parapets that have pyramidal corner finials at the outer corners, except for the tower. The four-stage central tower includes a pointed-arched window at the first stage, transomed bipartite windows at the second stage, clock faces at the third stage with a sculpted heraldic panel below the center clock, and a top stage featuring louvred bipartite windows, a corbelled parapet with a pepperpot, and crenellated corner bartizans. There are single-storey lean-to vestibules with four-centre-arched doorways at the re-entrant angles flanking the tower, which return with stepped bipartite lancets and four-centre-arched bipartite windows above.

The main block consists of five bays with raised margins and an eaves cornice. It has round-arched windows at ground level and single windows at gallery level, with the westernmost bays (part of the 1900 extension) featuring bipartite windows and a smaller rectangular choir (also from 1900) to the southwest with two round-arched windows. Small gabled porches are present on the west side. The windows contain rectangular leaded panes, some of which have border glazing, and the roof is slate with a moulded eaves gutter.

Inside, the church has painted render and a flat roof. Raked galleries are present on the sides only, bowing out at the corners, supported by slender cast-iron columns with foliate capitals. The laird's loft is located at the northeast with carved emblems on the front. The choir features panelled and carved stalls, a wainscot panelled backplate to the pulpit, a communion table from around 1925 designed by Peter MacGregor Chalmers, and a screen, along with a redundant organ. There are stained glass commemorative windows dating from around 1890.

The church is enclosed by boundary walls, which consist of a low rubble wall with coped gatepiers and railings.
