Description
This is a 4-storey corner tenement block designed by A N Paterson and built in 1915, constructed in a Glasgow style. The building fronts onto Kempock Place and Bath Street, with a bank occupying the ground floor. It is largely built of red sandstone, laid in coursed and stugged patterns with polished ashlar dressings to the front, while the rear and sides are harled. A base course is present, alongside keystoned round- and segmental-arched ground floor openings, and a stepped band course above the ground floor. Canted bays feature stylised Gibbsian surrounds at the 1st and 2nd floors, while the 3rd floor windows are framed by engaged columns, topped by an eaves cornice and overhanging eaves with exposed rafters.
The north-east elevation, facing Kempock Place, has four bays including a corner bay. A doorway to the bank occupies a chamfered corner to the left, featuring a decorative ironwork fanlight, a two-leaf door, and a blank panel above the lintel. A 3-storey 4-light corner oriel window rises above the left bay on three stylised scrolled corbels, with a dentilled cornice above the 2nd floor windows. A bay to the left of centre has a stepped corbel table supporting a wallhead stack rising from the 1st floor. To the right of centre is a corbelled balcony beneath the 3rd floor window. The outer right bay features a 3-storey canted oriel window corbelled from the 1st floor.
The south-east elevation, facing Bath Street, extends over five bays on a sloping ground level. The central bay contains a 3-storey canted oriel window corbelled from the 1st floor. A bay to the right of centre is blank and features a 3rd floor balcony similar to others. The outer right bay mirrors the north-east elevation, with a corbel table and wallhead stack. A bay to the left of centre has a segmental-arched opening at ground floor and small windows positioned off-centre above. The outer left bay contains a corniced doorway framed by corbelled shafts, with windows above, culminating in a semi-circular gablehead breaking the eaves above the 3rd floor window.
A two-bay, 2-storey wing adjoins the outer left side, featuring segmental-arched openings with narrow timber shopfronts and recessed doorways; bipartite windows are set above. A gable is present to the left bay, while a balustraded parapet tops the right side.
The north-west (rear) elevation is harled with a semi-circular stair tower and two wallhead stacks. It is punctuated by small-pane timber sash and case windows with radial fanlights.
The roof is covered with slate, with four wallhead stacks; those flanking the entrance bay have angle pilasters.
The banking hall inside the building features timber panelling and a decorative plaster ceiling.
