Free Church, Kenneth Street, Stornoway, Lewis

The Free Church on Kenneth Street in Stornoway, Lewis, was built around 1843. It is a rectangular-plan Gothic church with a box-type design and a main gabled front facing Kenneth Street. The center of the facade features a slightly advanced engaged shallow entrance tower, which has off-set stages and tall pinnacles topped with iron finials, resembling the tower of the nearby Episcopal church. The church has pointed openings throughout, although the original tracery was replaced with a much simpler pattern in the 1980s. The exterior is dry-dashed with contrasting rendered margins that are shaped to look like rock-faced ashlar. The gable includes a central double doorway, a gallery window above a clock, and a louvred lancet in the stages above, with windows on either side. The north flank has three bays with outshots, and there is a door located close to the front gable. A rear wing is recessed on the right side. A plain boundary wall runs along the street. The interior was not inspected during the 1989 resurvey.
