Description

Cumbrae Parish Church, a Church of Scotland, was built in 1837 and features a symmetrical, rectangular plan with three bays in a Gothic style. The south elevation has a slightly advanced central three-stage crenellated clock tower with corner finials. The church is constructed of ashlar on the south elevation and rubble with ashlar margins on the other sides. It includes a base course, string course, and hoodmoulding, along with two and three-lancet windows featuring simple tracery. The south elevation has central steps leading to a Tudor-arch doorway, which is fitted with a two-leaf boarded timber entrance door adorned with large decorative iron hinges.

There is a later single-storey gabled hall extension added to the north in the 19th century. The windows predominantly feature a diamond or small multi-pane fixed glazing pattern with metal astragals, and some include simple coloured glass. The roof is covered with grey slates.

Inside, the church has a fine and coherent interior scheme with mostly original fittings. The walls are whitewashed, and the chancel arch has exposed masonry margins. A timber gallery wraps around three sides, featuring carved Gothic tracery and supported by slender cast-iron columns. The interior also includes timber pews, a pulpit, and communion tables, along with some six-panel timber doors, one of which has a Hebrew inscription above.

The boundary wall to the east is low, coped, and coursed, featuring a pair of square-plan gatepiers topped with low pyramidal capstones.
