Description
Martin's Memorial Church is a Gothic church built around 1890 to 1900, featuring a corner tower and spire, with halls located at the rear. It occupies a corner site and is enclosed by decorative cast-iron railings. The church is constructed from imported stone, with local stone used in concealed areas, and is made of roughly coursed brown stone, possibly from Loch Broom, with contrasting yellow ashlar dressings and slate roofs.
The main front of the church, facing Kenneth Street, includes a nave and aisles, highlighted by a large geometric-traceried window in the main gable. A stair turret is positioned to the right, while the tower is located on the left. The tower features the main entrance, which has a moulded, pointed arch set in a shallow projecting gable, with nook-shafts that have uncarved capitals. The belfry stage contains louvred bipartite windows, and the decorative top stage is adorned with corbelled and pinnacled tall angle shafts, topped with iron finials and a stone spire.
The flank of the church facing Francis Street has a gable on the left side and tall lancet windows. The main roof sweeps over the side aisle and includes dormer ventilators. An adjoining hall is located at the east gable, which may not be part of the original design due to differing detailing. The two gables facing Francis Street each feature a large roundel set above pointed openings, with the left angle containing openings within a shallow-recessed archway and a pair of timber-traceried windows. The boundary wall steps down to the street and includes an impressive and complete run of decorative cast-iron railings with gates and gatepiers. The interior was not inspected during the 1989 resurvey.
