Description
Turfhills House is an early 19th century, two-storey and attic, three-bay classical house with a rectangular plan and traditional detailing. It features a single-storey addition and is constructed from rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings, including an ashlar entrance elevation, eaves cornice, and blocking course.
On the south elevation, there is a broad pilastered doorcase at the center, topped with a cornice and blocking course, leading to a panelled door and a rectangular plate glass fanlight. To the left, a slightly projecting three-light window is adorned with a cornice and blocking course, while a window is positioned to the right. The first floor has regular fenestration, and there are later slate-hung gabled dormers above the outer bays. The single-storey wing to the right is recessed and features a slightly advanced three-light window.
The north elevation includes a stair window at the center, flanked by windows in widely spaced outer bays on each floor. The single-storey wing on this side has a French window that projects to the left and clasps the house at a piended corner.
On the west elevation, windows are located either at the center or off-center. There is a later single-storey, low-key, flat-roofed addition to the left. The east elevation has a window on each floor, either at the center or off-center, with a single-storey gabled addition to the right.
The house features small-pane timber sash and case windows, with four panes in the dormers and one attic window. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are ashlar coped skews and broad gablehead corniced stacks with full complements of octagonal cans. The interior has not been seen.
