Description

81 High Street in Montrose is an early 19th century, two-storey and attic house with a rectangular plan, featuring three bays. The building is constructed of rubble stone, with scribed render on the front and harled surfaces on one side and the rear. It has an eaves band course and plain margins.

The principal elevation includes a three-step flight leading to a central doorpiece with an architrave and console details, with a window centered above it. The flanking bays are symmetrical, and the basement windows are blocked. The first-floor windows are larger, and there are piended dormers, with the outer pair partly sunk.

The south elevation has a blank gable end where the harling has been removed. The north elevation features a gable end with a door at ground level. The west elevation has a tall central window that lights the staircase, with symmetrical flanking bays and a small additional window to the right at ground level. Above the outer bays, there are bowed timber mullioned three-light dormers.

The windows are timber sash and case, with plate glass and removed astragals. The staircase window features 24-pane coloured glass. The roof is covered in grey slate, with stone skews and a black gablehead stack on the south side, while the north side is rendered.

Inside, there is a semi-circular staircase and two terracotta chimney pieces in the principal rooms on the west side of the first floor. A ceiling rose is present in the room to the east, and the basement rooms are lined with brick, featuring stone flags.

The property is enclosed by rubble stone boundary walls on the north, south, and east sides, with the wall on the east being close to the house.
