Description
95 High Street in Montrose is an earlier 19th-century tenement building that stands three stories tall with an attic and features an asymmetrical four-bay plan. The building is constructed of much weathered sandstone, with ashlar stone on the front, squared and snecked stone on the south side, and rubble stone on the north side. It has a cill cornice at the first floor, a cill band course at the second floor, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course.
The west elevation, which is the principal front, has a ground floor that has been significantly altered to accommodate a modern public house, with a door leading to the tenement on the outer left. The first and second floors each have four regularly spaced windows; the first-floor windows feature architraved margins, while the second-floor windows have roll-moulded arrises. Above, there are two canted dormers.
The north elevation shows a rubble stone gable end that adjoins No. 91 High Street. An eastward wing extends from this side, with irregular window placements, and the ground and first floors are obscured by the closely built neighboring properties, Nos. 91 and 89 High Street. The margins are plain.
The south elevation features a gable end adjoining No. 97 High Street, with an eastward wing that includes a two-bay, bow-fronted section on the left, where the third window at ground level is blocked. To the right is a five-bay section that has been rendered at the ground and first floors, with doors on both the left and right sides, an eaves cornice, plain margins, and piended dormers.
The east elevation adjoins No. 97 High Street. The building has timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and the east wing has been re-tiled and piended. Stone skews are present, along with ashlar gablehead stacks on the north and south sides and in the center of the east wing, as well as two tall brick stacks rising from the eaves on the north side.
The interior was not seen in 1997.
