Description
97 and 99 High Street in Montrose is a mid-18th century and earlier 19th century, three-storey and attic, three-bay L-plan house that forms part of an irregular terrace. The building features a traditional shopfront on the ground floor to the right, with a pend to the left. There are doors located in the north and south walls of the pend. The first and second floors have symmetrical bays, and there is a part-sunk piended dormer that is offset to the left.
On the east elevation, there is a single bay gable end to the left with a semi-external stack, and windows to the right. A single-storey addition adjoins and advances to the east, with a single bay set back above the pend and a part-sunk piended dormer above.
The south elevation adjoins 101 High Street to the left and has a blank wing extending east to the right. The north elevation adjoins 95 High Street to the right and has a wing extending east to the left. There is a corniced doorpiece to the right with two-leaf panelled doors, and a window above on the first and second floors, with a door and window at ground level to the left.
The windows are timber sash and case with four panes. The roof is covered in grey slate, and there is a brick gablehead stack on the east side. The interior can be accessed to the upper floors via an entrance in the east wing beyond the pend, and there have been alterations over many years.
