Description
109 High Street in Montrose is a late 18th century, four-storey and attic tenement block with five bays, arranged in a 1-3-1 grouping, featuring shops on the ground floor. The building is constructed of rubble stone, with the front rendered and plain margins.
The west elevation, which is the principal facade, has a central pend with shopfronts on either side at ground level. Above the first floor cill, there is a timber dentil cornice. The first to third floors are symmetrical, displaying regular fenestration, with piended dormers on both the left and right sides. Timber beams are visible in the pend, and there is a blocked doorway and window on the south wall.
The north elevation is adjacent to 101 High Street, while the south elevation is next to 113 High Street. The east elevation is asymmetrical, featuring an advanced stairtower on the left side, with a window at the first and third floors. There is a doorway in the return with a window above it at the second floor. Above the pend, there is one bay with windows on the first to third floors, and to the right, there are windows on the first and second floors, along with a dormer above and to the right.
The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows at the front, with variations at the rear. It is topped with a grey slate roof and has a broad brick gablehead stack with a full complement of cans on both the north and south sides. The interior was not seen in 1997.
