Description
70-72 High Street in Montrose is a late 18th century, four-storey and attic, two-bay tenement building that includes a shop on the ground floor. It is part of an irregular terrace, featuring lined render on the front and rubble stone at the rear. The building has a cill band course on the second floor, a cornice, and a pediment above the third floor, with plain margins.
On the east (principal) elevation, there are three bays on the ground floor, with a narrow rectangular fanlight above the door to the right, a shopfront to the left, and a door at the center with a window to the left. The first and second floors are symmetrical, with smaller windows on the first floor. There is a pedimented wallhead chimney and piended dormers on either side.
The north elevation is adjacent to 68 High Street, while the south elevation adjoins 74 High Street from the ground to the second floor, featuring a harled gable end above. The west elevation abuts 60 and 64 High Street (Close) on the left, with an addition at ground level and irregular fenestration above, including a later attic storey addition.
The building has four-pane timber sash and case windows, with a variety of patterns at the rear and casements in the attic. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring a stone skew to the south and a brick gablehead stack also to the south. The interior was not seen in 1997.
