Description

80 High Street, 78, Montrose is an early to earlier 19th century, three-storey and attic, five-bay classical tenement that is part of an irregular terrace with shops on the ground floor. The front is finished in stugged sandstone ashlar, while the rear is constructed from rubble stone. It features a cornice above the ground floor, an eaves cornice parapet, and a pediment, with pilaster quoins.

On the principal elevation, there is a pend entrance in the center at ground level, which has an unglazed fanlight with a decorative grille above it. Shops flank the entrance, with a modern shopfront to the left and a 19th century shopfront to the right, which includes a central door with flanking windows and architraved margins. An entrance to the upper stories is located at the extreme left, also with an architraved surround. The first and second floors are symmetrical, with a three-bay central section that breaks the eaves. The central windows are blinded, while the outer bays feature stone-mullioned tripartite windows. The attic storey is pedimented and has a chimney at the apex, with small piended dormers on either side, and stone urns to the left and right of the pediment and parapet.

The north elevation adjoins 74 High Street, and the south elevation adjoins 88 High Street. The west elevation has a three-storey building adjoining to the left, with one window above to the extreme left and a dormer above. There is a single bay to the right, with a pend at ground level and a narrow window to the right. The first and second floors have stone-mullioned bipartite windows, and there is a dormer above. A projecting four-storey, single bay section is to the right, with a small opening to the left at basement level and centered windows at the first to third floors. The returns are blank, and there is a single bay to the right, with an early brick lean-to at ground level and windows at the first and second floors, along with a dormer above.

The windows are timber sash and case, with plate glass on the front and 12 and 18-pane windows at the rear. The roof is covered in grey slate, with brick gablehead stacks to the north and south, and a brick stack rising from the eaves to the east. The stone skews are also present.

Inside, the shop to the right extends into a three-storey building at the rear on the ground floor. The upper storeys were not seen in 1997.
