Description

40-42 High Street in Montrose is an earlier 19th-century, three-storey, three-bay classical tenement that is part of an irregular terrace, featuring a shop on the ground floor. The front is constructed of sandstone ashlar, while the sides and rear are partially harled and rendered. It has a base course, an entablature above the ground floor, a cill cornice on the second floor, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course, with architraved margins. The shopfront is framed by pilasters.

The principal elevation has four bays, with pilasters at the ground level. There is a pend to the left and a door to the right within the pend, along with a doorway that has flanking windows to the right. The windows are plate glass with low stall risers. The first and second floors are symmetrical, although the centre windows are blocked, and there are corniced windows on the first floor.

The south elevation is adjacent to 44 High Street, while the north elevation adjoins 36 High Street at the ground and first floors, with a blank gable end above and a section extending west to the right. The west elevation shows the gable end of a house extending west.

The building features timber sash and case windows and has a grey slate roof. There is a corniced and rendered gablehead stack on the north side and a brick stack rising from the eaves on the north of the west section. The interior was not seen in 1997.
