16-18 High Street, Montrose

16-18 High Street in Montrose is an early 19th-century, three-storey and attic, four-bay tenement that forms part of an irregular terrace with shops on the ground floor. The front is finished in sandstone ashlar, while the sides are rendered, featuring a band course above the ground floor.

The principal elevation has modern shopfronts at ground level, with regular window arrangement on the first and second floors, and two canted, piended dormers above. The southeast elevation adjoins 20 High Street. The northwest elevation has a gable end to the left, with one bay to the right and a two-bay section extending west. There is a doorway to the left at ground level, featuring an ashlar porch with a five-pane rectangular fanlight, and one window on both the first and second floors above. There is also an opening at ground level to the right, with a window lighting the staircase above.

The west elevation is a blank gable end. The building features timber casement windows on the first floor, and timber sash and case windows on the second floor and in the dormers. The roof is covered with grey slate, with a stone skew, a brick gablehead stack to the north, and a tall, broad brick stack on the party wall to the south. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.

The interior was not seen in 1997. The property has rubblestone boundary walls to the rear that extend west.
