Description
20 High Street in Montrose is a tenement building dating from around 1800. It is three storeys high with an attic and has four bays, forming part of an irregular terrace. The front is finished in lined render, while the rear is harled, featuring raised margins.
On the east elevation, there is a pend to the left at ground level, with a panel displaying the number above the opening and a wrought-iron gate. To the right is a shop, with a central door and flanking plate glass windows. The first and second floors have regular fenestration, and there are two canted, piended dormers above.
The south elevation is adjacent to 24 High Street, while the north elevation is next to 16/18 High Street.
On the west elevation, there is a forestair to the left leading to an entrance door at the first floor. This section extends west and has been much altered, with a window at the third floor above. To the right, there is a bay with a pend at ground level and doorways to the left and right within the pend. Above, there is a tall multi-pane window at the first and second floors.
The building features timber sash and case windows on the first and second floors and in the dormers. The east roof pitch is covered with grey and brown slates, while the west side has brown machine tiles. There are tall and broad brick stacks on the party walls to the north and south, and cast-iron rainwater goods are present.
The interior was not seen in 1997.
