Description
160-164 High Street in Montrose is a three-storey and attic, four-bay tenement building from the early to mid-19th century, situated in an irregular terrace with commercial premises on the ground floor. The front is constructed of squared sandstone, while the rear is harled, featuring dressed margins at the front.
The principal elevation is asymmetrical, with a three-bay shopfront at ground level that includes two windows and a door. The entrance to the upper storeys is located to the right, and there is a pend entrance to the left with a timber gate. Above the shopfront, there is a deep fascia and cornice. The first and second floors are symmetrical, with two canted dormers that have billetted cornices.
To the northeast, the building adjoins 156 High Street on the left, with a wing extending west to the right. There are windows on the first and second floors to the extreme left and in the return to the left. The southeast elevation adjoins 166 and 168 High Street.
The west elevation features a two-bay gable end. The front has four-pane timber sash and case windows, with plate glass lower sashes on the first floor, while the rear has a variety of timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are stone skews, a broad brick stack on the party wall to the north, and a harled gable head stack to the west.
The interior was not seen in 1997.
