Description
166 High Street in Montrose is a tenement building dating from around 1880. It is three stories tall with an attic and features two bays, situated within an irregular terrace. The building showcases classical architectural details, with a front made of sandstone ashlar and a harled rear. There is a cornice above the ground floor and a cill band course at the first and second floors.
On the east elevation, there is a modern plate glass shopfront on the right side at ground level, with a pend entrance to the left. The first floor has arcaded tripartite windows in each bay, featuring segmental architraved heads that connect to a string course, with a keystoned center light. The second floor has two windows with bracketed cills and decorative cast-iron cill guards, raised margins, lugged surrounds, and shallow strapwork decoration on the jambs. Above, there are two canted dormers.
The north elevation is adjacent to 160-164 High Street, while the south elevation adjoins 170 and 172 High Street. The west elevation has a pend entrance to the right at ground level, with a blocked door to the left in the pend. Above, there is a single window. To the left, 168 High Street partially obscures a boarded window at ground level, with a window in the re-entrant angle at the first floor and another window at the second floor, offset to the left.
The building features timber sash and case windows, with plate glass at the front and 8-pane windows at the rear. It has a grey slate pitched roof, with stone skews and skewputts, and ashlar gablehead stacks. The interior was not seen in 1997.
