178 High Street, Montrose

176 High Street in Montrose is an earlier 19th-century, three-storey, six-bay classical tenement that is part of an irregular terrace with shops on the ground floor. The front is made of sandstone ashlar, while the rear features squared and snecked stonework. Notable architectural details include a cill cornice on the first floor, a band course between the first and second floors, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course that is raised at the center, adorned with ornate cast-iron brattishing.

On the principal (east) elevation, there are two modern shopfronts at ground level with plate glass and fascia boards that extend to the first floor cill cornice, along with a third entrance to the left. The first and second floors have symmetrical window arrangements, with ornate cast-iron window guards on the second floor.

The west elevation features four bays on the second floor, with additions at the ground and first floors in the center, adjacent to 174 High Street on the left. The south elevation is adjacent to 180-184 High Street. The north elevation is next to 170-172 High Street on the left and extends west into Doig's Close, featuring a single bay to the east.

The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a pitched roof covered with grey slates on the front block, and twin piended roofs at the rear. There are brick wall head stacks on the north and south sides. The interior was not seen in 1997.
