Description
156 High Street in Montrose is an early 19th-century tenement building that stands three stories high with an attic and features three bays. It is part of an irregular terrace and has a shop on the ground floor. The front is finished with lined bull-faced render, while the rear is harled. There is a cornice above the ground floor and plain margins.
On the principal elevation, the ground floor has a 19th-century shopfront with a recessed door in the center, twin-leaf doors, and flanking plate glass windows, along with stall risers. To the left, there is a pend entrance. The first and second floors are symmetrically arranged, featuring two piended dormers with timber-mullioned bipartite windows.
The northeast elevation adjoins 150/152 High Street, while the southeast elevation adjoins 164 High Street. The west elevation includes a pend entrance to the right on the ground floor, with a window on the first and second floors offset to the left, and a large dormer with a timber-mullioned tripartite window. No 158 High Street is adjacent to the left.
The building has 4-pane timber sash and case windows, with plate glass in the dormers. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are stone skews and broad brick stacks on the party walls to the north and south. The interior was not seen in 1997.
