Description

44-46 High Street in Montrose is a classical tenement building from the earlier to mid 19th century. It has three storeys and an attic, with two bays, and is part of an irregular terrace that includes a shop at ground level. The building is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features a cill cornice on the first floor, a cill band course on the second floor, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course, along with architraved margins.

On the east elevation, there is a pend to the left at ground level with a wrought-iron gate, and a window to the right in the pend. There are two openings to the left within the pend, and a late 19th-century shopfront to the right, which has plate glass and decorative framing. The first and second floors are symmetrical, with corniced windows on the first floor and canted piended dormers above.

The north elevation adjoins 40 High Street to the left, with a wing extending to the west on the right. The south elevation adjoins 48 High Street to the right, with a wing extending to the west and a forestair leading to a door above ground level. The west elevation shows the piended end of the west wing.

The building has modern casement windows on the first and second floors, while the dormers feature timber sash and case windows. It has a grey slate roof, with a very broad ashlar gablehead stack on the north that continues into the eaves of the west wing, and a capped ashlar stack to the south on the party wall. The interior was not seen in 1997.
