Description
56 High Street in Montrose is a mid and later 19th century four-storey tenement that has a later two-storey house attached to it. The building is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone on the south side and rubble stone on the north side, featuring a band course below the fourth floor.
The principal elevation on the south side has an irregular arrangement of windows, with two doors at ground level. There is a stone and cast-iron external dog-leg staircase that leads to a first-floor entrance, which has a corniced doorpiece to the right. To the left is the later two-storey house, which has a bow-fronted and corniced single-storey projection on its return.
The north elevation features a blank wall for the four-storey tenement, with a window located on the first floor of the two-storey house. The east elevation is adjacent to 54 High Street.
The building includes eight-pane and various later timber sash and case windows, with modern casements at ground level. There are brick stacks located to the north and south of the two-storey house.
The interior has not been seen. The boundary walls are made of brick and rubblestone on the west side.
