Description

This is an 18th-century building, likely incorporating elements from the 17th century, with additions from the early 19th century. It is a three-story, irregular T-shaped domestic tenement situated within a close. The building is constructed of sandstone, with some areas squared and snecked, some rubble, and some brickwork.

The south elevation is adjoined to and connects with 76 High Street on its right-hand side. A window is located in the re-entrant angle above ground level. The main facade has four bays, with a bay to the right featuring a timber mullioned, two-part window at ground level, and windows on the first and second floors which are set back. Two bays in the centre are closely set. A doorway is on the right with a shallow, four-pane fanlight, while a larger doorway is on the left, featuring a flush panel door, an architraved frame, and narrow glazed lights flanking a shallow rectangular fanlight. The first and second floors have symmetrically disposed windows, and a bay to the left has a round-arch doorway at ground level, a panelled door, an architraved frame, and four-pane glazing flanking it. Blocked windows are visible on the first and second floors, with a blank gable end of a wing extending south to the left.

The east elevation includes a 19th-century wing to the left, with a door at ground level and a single bay to the right with windows on the ground, first, and second floors. A section then extends east to connect with the southern elevation. To the right is a wing likely dating to the 17th century, with early 19th-century brick additions. A single bay of the original house is visible on the right, featuring a window at ground level and a recent dormer above. An advanced brick-built section is to the left, followed by a blank single bay, with a door at ground level and a window on the first and second floors. Further projecting single bays extend to the left, also in brick.

The west elevation has a 19th-century wing projecting to the right, displaying two bays, a small ground-floor window, and windows on the first and second floors, the first-floor windows being larger. A projecting, bow-fronted section is to the left, constructed of brick with sandstone margins. Two bays are present, with two doors at ground level. To the left is the original house, featuring three bays and irregular fenestration at ground level, symmetrical fenestration on the first floor, and two dormer-headed windows above.

The windows are timber sash and case, with 12 panes on the west elevation, to the south wing of the east elevation, and to the central bays of the south elevation. A variety of window patterns exist elsewhere. The roof is covered in grey slate, with a brick ridge stack on the east wing, and brick gablehead stacks to the north and south. Coped skews are also present.

The interior features notably intact fielded panelling in the principal rooms on the first floor, likely dating to the mid-18th century. It contains a large quarter-turn staircase with cast-iron balusters and a dome with an oculus above. A stone fireplace (formerly likely in the kitchen) is located in the north gable wall, along with an aumbry in an internal wall to the south of the original house. The principal room of the 19th-century addition retains an original cornice with acorn and vine decoration. A wing extending east is now a separate dwelling and was not inspected in 1997.
