Description
6 John Street in Montrose is a building dating from around 1800. It is a two-storey, five-bay structure with a rectangular plan. The front is finished in painted render, while the sides and rear are made of rubble stone. There is a corniced, deep name band course above the ground floor on the north side.
On the north elevation, there is a mid to late 19th century shopfront featuring pilasters. The shopfront is divided into eight irregular sections by these pilasters. It includes four 20th century timber-mullioned bipartite windows with multi-pane rectangular fanlights on either side of the center. To the left of center, there is a single window with a multi-pane toplight, and another single window with a multi-pane toplight to the left of that. A door is set back towards the penultimate right, with a plain window to the outer right that has plate glass. The deep band course has console ends and a flush fitting canopy above. The first floor has five windows.
The west elevation adjoins 2 John Street and 31/33 High Street. The east elevation features a gable end with a narrow window to the right on the first floor. The south elevation has two blocked openings to the right and single-storey additions that obscure the left side of the elevation.
The north elevation includes plate glass. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are stone skews on the east side. The east gablehead has a rendered stack with a narrow cornice, and there are cast-iron rooflights.
The interior was not seen in 1997.
