Description

57 John Street in Montrose is a mid-19th century classical house that features two storeys, an attic, and a basement, and is part of an irregular terrace. The front is finished in broached sandstone ashlar, while the side and rear elevations are made of squared snecked and tooled sandstone. There is a band course at both the ground and first floors, a cill course at the first floor, and a corniced eaves course along with a blocking course.

On the left side of the front, there is a consoled, corniced, and architraved doorpiece that holds a four-panel timber door and a two-pane rectangular fanlight. The windows on the ground and first floors have raised surrounds, and the north (rear) elevation features projecting cills. The basement has a bipartite window, and there is a bowed slate-hung dormer on the right.

The north (rear) elevation consists of two bays and includes a late 20th century single-storey canted bay made of ashlar on the right. The windows throughout predominantly have a 12-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case style. The roof is covered with grey slate and has coped skews, with a brick gablehead stack to the east that has polygonal clay cans.

Inside, as seen in 2011, the house has a decorative classical scheme with moulded cornicing and later ceiling roses. Some original fireplaces and panelled timber doors remain, along with a stone staircase that features a decorative cast-iron balustrade and timber handrail. There is some original window ironmongery, and the entrance hall has a later geometric tiled floor designed in a 19th century period style. The interior has undergone some remodelling in the 20th century.

The boundary walls include a low coped ashlar wall at the front (south) topped with a cast-iron gate and railings adorned with fleur-de-lys finials. To the east, there is a rubble stone boundary wall with a square section pier at the southern end.
