Description

36 The Mall in Montrose is a late 19th-century, two-storey and attic, three-bay classical house. The front is finished in pale ashlar, while the sides and rear are made of red sandstone that is squared and coursed. The building features a base course, a ground floor cill course, and an eaves band course, with raised and architraved margins.

On the west elevation, there is a two-step flight leading to a central doorpiece that is pilastered and round-arched, topped with an entablature and a keystoned dentil cornice. The doorpiece includes a plain fanlight and two-leaf, three-panel doors. Above, there is a window with a bracketed cill at the first floor and a small round-arched dormer above that. To the right, there is a bay with a pilastered window featuring a scrolled entablature and a dentil cornice at the head, along with another window with a bracketed cill at the first floor. To the left, there is a full-height canted window with a blocking course.

The south elevation has a window in the center at both the ground and first floors. The east elevation features a basement window and a stone flight leading to a door at the raised ground floor in the center, with a small window to the left and a tall round-arched window above that has etched and colored glass. The bays flanking this elevation contain windows at the basement, ground, and first floors.

The house predominantly has four-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, featuring intricate cast-iron brattishing on the central platform. There are shouldered and corniced ashlar stacks on the north and south sides, each with a full complement of square section cans.

Inside, the principal rooms boast decorative plasterwork, and there is a black marble fireplace in the drawing room to the north.

The property is enclosed by a low, coped ashlar boundary wall at the front, with coped rubble walls at the rear. The side passage to the south features capped gatepiers and a screening wall.
