Netherlea, 37 North Esk Road, Montrose

Netherlea is a mid-19th century single-storey and attic house located at 37 North Esk Road in Montrose, set on a sloping site at the rear. The front is finished in sandstone ashlar, while the sides and rear are constructed from stugged, squared, and snecked stone.

The east elevation, which is the principal facade, features a symmetrical design with a six-step stone flight leading up to a doorpiece that has consoles and a cornice. This doorpiece includes a rectangular fanlight above a four-panel door. On either side of the entrance are canted windows, each topped with canted dormers that have finials.

The north and south elevations are gable ends, with the south elevation containing a window. The west elevation is a two-storey and attic section that includes a small conservatory at the center, a tall shallow-arched window above it, and dormers featuring timber mullioned bipartite windows.

The house has timber sash and case windows with plate glass. The roof is pitched and covered with grey slate, and it features stone skews. There are ashlar gablehead stacks on both the north and south sides, along with moulded cast-iron guttering.

The property is enclosed by low coped boundary walls with square-section ashlar corner piers and decorative wrought-iron railings at the front. The rear boundary walls are coped and rendered.
