Description
Reston Primary School, built in 1897 with later additions and alterations, is a single-storey complex featuring a symmetrical, seven-bay principal range arranged in a 2-3-2 pattern. At the rear, there is a gabled wing that forms an L-shape with a polygonal projection on the side, along with later single-storey additions and a substantial flat-roofed addition to the side. The front is constructed from coursed and bull-faced cream sandstone, while the sides and rear are made of squared and snecked tooled cream sandstone, with ashlar dressings. The building has a base course, moulded eaves, narrow quoin strips, long and short quoins, and surrounds to openings, as well as projecting cills. There is a brick-built addition to the side and harled additions at the rear.
On the northeast (entrance) elevation, a gabled bay is slightly advanced at the center, featuring three large segmental-arched windows at ground level, with a circular window centered above. There is a round-arched opening in a scroll-bracketed, pedimented bellcote surmounting the gable, and an inscribed panel set below. The remaining bays to the left and right have bipartite windows. The polygonal projection is recessed to the outer right, while the flat-roofed addition is recessed to the outer left.
The southeast (side) elevation has a gable end to the right with three large segmental-arched windows at ground level and a circular window centered above, along with a flat-roofed addition at the front.
On the southwest (rear) elevation, the principal block has various additions at the front, with a gabled wing projecting to the left and a polygonal projection recessed to the outer left. A modern gabled block is adjoined to the right, with a flat-roofed addition to the outer right.
The northwest (side) elevation features a gable end to the left with three large segmental-arched windows at ground level and a circular window centered above. To the right, there is a lower wing with single windows in the polygonal projection to the left and a timber door in a bay recessed to the right. Modern additions are recessed to the outer right.
The original block has timber windows, while the remainder has modern windows. The roof is covered in grey slate with sandstone ridging, stone-coped skews with kneelers, and bracketed skewputts, along with iron rainwater goods.
The boundary walls consist of rubble walls with arched coping, enclosing the site and topped with plain iron railings. There are finialled gatepiers and iron gates.
