Description
Mill Lade House in Reston dates back to 1848 and features later additions and alterations. This symmetrical, two-storey house with an attic has a rectangular plan and consists of three bays. It includes a single-storey wing and a lower, single-storey addition at the rear, forming an L-shape. An engaged octagonal entrance tower is positioned in the rear re-entrant angle.
The exterior is constructed of rubble whinstone and sandstone, with cream sandstone dressings. It has droved quoins and long and short surrounds to the openings, along with projecting cills. The entrance tower features cream sandstone ashlar at the ground level and painted harl at the first floor, with sandstone margins.
On the southeast (entrance) elevation, there is a deep-set, part-glazed timber panelled door at the center of the ground floor, flanked by single windows. The first floor has single windows in all bays, with a central cill inscribed 'J N 1848'. Above this, there is a slate-hung, bipartite catslide dormer.
The northeast (side) elevation has a gable end to the left with a 3-light glazing row at the ground, offset to the right. A modern window is located in the single-storey block adjoining to the right. The lower single-storey block is recessed to the outer right, featuring a boarded timber door to the left and a single window to the right.
On the northwest (rear) elevation, the engaged entrance tower is at the center, featuring a two-leaf timber panelled door at the ground with a roll-moulded surround. There are single windows in all three bays at the first floor, topped with a ball-finialled octagonal cap. A single window is located at the ground in the bay recessed to the right, with a piended, bipartite dormer aligned above. A single-storey range projects to the left, with a piended, bipartite dormer recessed above.
The house features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows at the front, 6-pane glazing in the entrance tower, and 4-light dormers. The roofs are covered with grey slate and have terracotta ridging and stone-coped skews. There are brick-built apex stacks on the northeast and southwest main block, a squat apex stack on the single-storey wing, and various circular flues.
The interior was not seen in 1999.
