Description
Shawbraes is an 18th-century farmhouse that has undergone later additions and alterations. It features a symmetrical, two-storey, five-bay rectangular plan, with a taller addition at the rear creating a near L-plan. There is a single-storey, single-bay wing on the outer right and a later single-storey, three-bay wing recessed to the outer left. The building is constructed from harl-pointed sandstone and whinstone rubble, with cream sandstone dressings and a dry-dashed wing on the outer left. The quoins are droved, and there are long and short surrounds to some openings, along with ashlar margins and projecting cills throughout.
On the south elevation, the main block has a timber panelled door at the centre of the ground floor, topped by a 2-pane letterbox fanlight. There is a single window aligned at the first floor, with additional windows in the remaining bays to the left and right. The single-storey wing on the outer right has one window, while the recessed three-bay wing on the outer left also features single windows.
The east elevation includes a single-storey projection on the left with windows in both bays. The principal block is set behind this projection and has a small attic light offset to the left of centre, with the taller wing adjoining to the right.
The windows predominantly feature 8- and 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case styles. The roofs are covered with grey slate, and the principal block has stone-coped skews, while the scrolled skewputts are adorned with decorative rope-moulding. There are sandstone apex and wallhead stacks, a brick-built stack on the rear wing, and various circular chimney cans. The property has iron rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen in 1999. The site is partially enclosed by coped rubble garden walls.
