Description

Hillend Farmhouse is a mid 19th century building, likely incorporating earlier materials, with later additions and alterations. This symmetrical, two-storey farmhouse has a three-bay rectangular plan, featuring a projecting porch and tripartite windows at the front. At the rear, there is a two-storey wing that creates a near T-plan, along with single-storey additions to the east and west, which form a service courtyard. The principal block has a rendered front and southwest side, while the northeast side is constructed of rubble, with additional rubble at the rear. Sandstone ashlar dressings are present, including a base course, a cill course at ground level, and an eaves course. The front has plain margins, while the side and rear openings feature long and short surrounds and projecting cills throughout.

On the southeast (entrance) elevation, there is a projecting, flat-roofed, corniced porch at the center with a small-pane glazed door and a plate glass fanlight. The tripartite windows with narrow side lights are set in corniced projections that are recessed to the left and right of the entrance, with single windows in all bays on the first floor.

The northeast (side) elevation shows the principal block to the left with a single window at ground level to the right. The two-storey wing is recessed to the right and has single-storey lean-to additions at the front.

On the southwest (side) elevation, the principal block is to the right with a single window at ground level to the left. The two-storey wing is recessed to the left, featuring a lean-to addition in the re-entrant angle to the right, along with various additions on the outer left that enclose the courtyard.

The windows are timber sash and case, with plate glass and 8- and 12-pane glazing. The roofs are covered with grey slate, either piended or pitched. The principal block has corniced, rendered wallhead stacks, while there is a brick-built ridge stack at the rear and various other stacks.

The interior was not seen in 1999. There is a cobbled service courtyard to the northwest and rubble walls that partially enclose the site.
