Description

Cruachan, located on Main Street in Reston, is possibly of 18th century origin with later additions and alterations. It was converted into a single property in the 20th century. The building consists of a pair of two-storey houses, with a three-bay section on the left and a four-bay section on the right, both featuring gabled projections at the front. There is also a single-storey and attic, gabled ancillary structure attached to the outer left side. The exterior is finished in whitewashed harl, with coursed, whitewashed render on the right side in part, and painted dressings throughout. The right side has quoins, and plain margins with projecting cills are present throughout.

On the south elevation, the three-bay block to the left has an exterior stair leading to a boarded timber door centered at the first floor, accompanied by a four-pane fanlight. There is a single window to the right at ground level and another window offset to the left above. A two-storey gabled projection is located to the left of center, featuring a large square-headed opening at ground level that is part-glazed, a single window centered in the gablehead, and a single window in a lean-to timber addition to the right, along with a small window in a lean-to addition to the left. The four-bay block on the right has a timber panelled door at ground level, offset to the right of center, with a letterbox fanlight above it and a single window aligned at the first floor. There is a gabled projection offset to the left of center with a pilastered shop front at ground level that includes a two-leaf timber panelled door to the left and a large bipartite window to the right, topped with a continuous cornice and a narrow window centered in the gablehead. Single windows are recessed at both floors on the outer left and right sides.

The windows feature four-pane glazing in timber sash and case style, with small rooflights present. The roofs are covered in grey slate and have stone-coped skews, with brick-built ridge and apex stacks and various circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1999. The ancillary structure, which is also finished in whitewashed harl, has a gable end on the south elevation with a boarded timber garage door offset to the left of center and a boarded opening centered above. It has a grey slate roof, and its interior was not seen in 1999.

The property is enclosed by low, coped, whitewashed boundary walls on the right, topped with spearheaded iron railings and featuring a spearheaded pedestrian gate.
