Description
Fogomuir Cottages, built around 1825 with later additions and alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries, consist of a pair of single-storey cottages that have been combined into one symmetrical six-bay block. The lower single-storey section is recessed to the outer right, and there is a single-storey addition at the rear. The cottages are constructed of harl-pointed rubble with tooled sandstone dressings. They feature stugged sandstone quoins and stugged long and short surrounds to the chamfered and droved openings, with sandstone mullions in the bipartite windows and projecting cills that are painted on the right. The dormer windows have stop-chamfered surrounds, and the rear addition is harled.
On the southeast (entrance) elevation, the main block has entrances in the penultimate bays to the outer left, which features a small-pane glazed door, and to the right, which has a boarded timber door with a letterbox fanlight. Both entrances are sheltered by overhanging timber bracketed gabled canopies supported by tie-beams and kingposts. The ground floor has bipartite windows in the flanking bays, with gabled bipartite dormers aligned above. There is also a boarded timber door offset to the right of centre in the single-storey former byre or pigsty to the outer right.
The northeast (side) elevation is a blind elevation to the single-storey projecting wing. The northwest (rear) elevation features a single-storey, four-bay addition at the centre, with single windows in the bays recessed to the left and right. There is a gabled byre or pigsty and a coped, rubble-walled enclosure to the outer left.
The front windows are timber sash and case with lying-pane glazing, while the rear has 4-pane glazing and modern windows in the rear addition, along with skylights. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with grey slate, featuring timber bargeboards and regularly spaced decorative ridge tiling on the canopies, dormers, and roof. There are corniced brick ridge and apex stacks, along with various circular cans.
The interiors were not seen in 1998. A low rubble wall encloses the garden to the left, while the wall is missing to the right.
