Description

The Harbour Master's Office, located on the Esplanade in Lerwick, was built in 1906. This two-storey, three-bay office has a square plan and features a two-storey wing that projects to the north from the northwest corner. The building has cement-rendered and lined walls, all painted, with a base course.

On the east elevation facing the Esplanade, there is a four-panel, two-leaf timber door with a plate glass fanlight set in a round-arched opening. The arch has a keystone at its center and a hoodmould with bracketed stops above. The flanking bays contain bipartite windows with curved reveals. Above the door, there is an architraved circular clock made by Potts & Son of Leeds, with the windows in the flanking bays breaking the eaves and featuring curvilinear dormerheads.

The south elevation, which faces Irvine Place, was originally symmetrical. It featured a centrally located window at ground level flanked by doors, although the door on the right has now been infilled. There are narrow windows flanking the central section and additional windows on the outer left and right sides. A tripartite window is centered on the first floor, breaking the eaves with a curvilinear dormerhead, and there is a matching window to the left.

The west elevation, or rear, is near-symmetrical, with tripartite windows to the left of center on both the ground and first floors, the latter matching the south elevation. There is a small square window at ground level in the right bay, and a modernized two-storey wing extends to the left.

The north elevation has two bays and is partially obscured by the modernized gabled wing that advances on the right. It features paired narrow windows at both ground and first floors, flanking a chimney gable that breaks the eaves with a curvilinear pediment.

The east elevation has modern glazing, while the other elevations feature plate glass timber sash and case windows. The roof is a purple-grey slate piended platform with overhanging timber eaves and profiled cast-iron gutters and downpipes. There are cement-rendered, coped wallhead stacks to the right of center on the south elevation, along with a flanking dormer on the rear elevation.

Surrounding the building is a yard wall that is cement-rendered and painted, bounding the yard to the north. A decorative metal town crest is supported by a timber post inset in the east wall, and the wall is terminated to the south by a square gate pier with a pyramidal cap and two-leaf wrought-iron gates.
