Description

38-42 Commercial Street in Lerwick is a two-storey building with a concealed basement, dating from around 1800. It features a three-bay tenement with a shop on the ground floor. The walls are made of random rubble, which is cement-rendered and lined at the shopfront.

The south elevation facing Commercial Street is nearly symmetrical, featuring a central nine-panel flush-beaded timber door with an infilled fanlight and a corniced lintel at the principal floor. To the left, there is a six-panel, two-leaf door, and to the right, another six-panel, two-leaf flush-beaded timber door with an infilled fanlight. The outer left bay has a two-pane fixed-light shop window, while the outer right bay has closely spaced four-pane timber sash and case windows. The first floor has a regular arrangement of windows.

The west elevation is a two-bay gable end with widely spaced ground floor windows. The north elevation, which is asymmetrical, has its basement obscured at the center and to the right by a modern concrete balcony that leads to a harled and gabled porch projecting from the center of the principal floor. There are four-pane fixed-lights at the basement to the left of the center. The outer bays at the principal and first floors have regular fenestration, while the center bay has a rubble-infilled window at an intermediate level, with an additional window inserted immediately to the left.

The east elevation features a single four-pane fixed-light window centered at the basement. The building predominantly has four-pane timber sash and case windows, a purple-grey slate roof, stugged sandstone apex stacks capped with circular cans, cement-rendered ashlar skew copes, and bracketted skewputts.
