Description
67 Commercial Street in Lerwick is an earlier 19th-century, three-storey tenement building. It features a single bay, bowed, nearly symmetrical main elevation facing Commercial Street, and an asymmetrical three-bay elevation on Church Road. The principal elevation is made of droved ashlar, while the sides are constructed from stugged sandstone with droved ashlar margins. The building includes a base course, string courses at the first and second floors, a lintel course at the second floor, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course that is raised at the center above. The windows have projecting cills.
On the north elevation facing Commercial Street, the design is near symmetrical. It has a 12-pane fixed-light shop window centered at the ground level, flanked by doorways. To the left is a four-panel, two-leaf timber door with a two-pane fanlight above, and to the right is an ashlar-infilled section to cill height with a six-pane fixed-light window. The upper floors feature tripartite windows, with a 12-pane timber sash and case window at the center and four-pane sidelights at the first floor, while the second floor has modern glazing. The elevation is topped with a coped wall that includes a door to a close adjoining on the right, with droved ashlar margins.
The east elevation facing Church Road is asymmetrical and consists of three bays. It has multi-pane fixed-lights with colored glass, round-arched above, at intermediate levels in the center bay. The windows include timber sash and case windows, with a 12-pane window at ground level and a four-pane window above, located immediately to the right of the center bay. There is a four-panel door with a plate glass fanlight at ground level immediately to the left of the center bay. The right bay is blank, and there is a blank section at the first floor in the left bay, which has four-pane timber sash and case windows at the ground and second floors. To the left, there is an adjoining two-storey, two-bay rubble building that is recessed, featuring hoppered windows and a corrugated asbestos roof.
The roof is made of grey slate, piended and curved over the bow. There is a multi-flue droved ashlar apex stack on the south gable and a wallhead stack on the right side of the east elevation, both coped with moulded circular cans. Ashlar skew copes complete the design.
