Description

11 Albert Street in Kirkwall is a building from the earlier to mid 19th century, with later alterations. It is a two-storey and attic structure with a rectangular plan, featuring a symmetrical gabled elevation facing the street. The building comprises two houses: Number 9, which is slightly taller and has two bays facing Albert Street, and Number 11, which is set behind and has three bays.

The ground floor of the south elevation features deep-set, two-leaf timber-panelled doors in the central bay, with large shop windows on either side. Above, there is a window in each bay on both floors, an oculus in the gablehead, and a stack above the gablehead.

On the east elevation, Number 9 has three closely set windows at ground level, with two evenly spaced windows on the first and second floors. Number 11 has a part-glazed door with a flanking window in the central bay at ground level, and a window above on the first floor. There is a window in each floor of the bay to the right, and an attic window above. The left bay features a bipartite window at ground level and a canted oriel window on the first floor.

The north elevation has a window in each floor of the left bay and a ground-level window in the right bay, with a stack above the gablehead. The west elevation is irregularly fenestrated.

The building displays a variety of glazing patterns, including replacement timber sash and case windows, timber-framed windows with top-hung upper lights, and uPVC windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring a stone ridge and stone skews on the south side, along with multi-flue corniced gablehead stacks on the north and south sides, and uPVC rainwater goods.

The interior of Number 9 has been converted into a café at ground level, with other areas unseen since 1998.
