Description

52 and 54 Albert Street in Kirkwall is an earlier 19th-century building with a crowstepped gabled wing from the 17th century at the rear, creating an L-shaped plan. The structure is two stories tall and has a rectangular shape, with the ground floor converted into a shop. The gable end faces the street and features cement-rendered and lined walls, with polished granite used for the shop front. There is a base course and a modern shop fascia between the ground and first floors, which is supported by gabletted stylised consoles.

On the west (principal) elevation, there is a recessed shop doorway with a modern glazed door at the ground level, flanked by large shop windows. Above, there is a window in each bay at the first floor, with a gablehead stack above. The north (side) elevation shows a three-bay main block to the right, with a window in each floor of the central bay and another in the left bay. The right bay has a wide shop window at the ground level, and there is a centered window in the crowstepped bay on the outer left.

The south (side) elevation features a window at the first floor in the central bay and another in the left bay. The ground floor has modern shop windows, while the upper floors have 2-and 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The main block has a grey slate roof, while the crowstepped block has a corrugated iron roof, with red clay ridge tiles, stone skews, and a coped, cement-rendered gablehead stack on the west side. The east side has a corniced, rubble gablehead stack, and uPVC rainwater goods are present.

The interior has been converted into a modern shop on the ground floor, with the upper floors remaining unseen since 1998.
