Description

Davidson's, located at 42 Albert Street in Kirkwall, is an 18th-century building that incorporates earlier structures and has undergone later alterations. It is a three-storey and attic, five-bay near-symmetrical rectangular-plan plain Georgian tenement block, set back from the street with various single-storey shops projecting from the front elevation. The exterior has been re-harled, and features concrete cills.

On the southwest (principal) elevation, there is a modern glazed door with an architrave at ground level in the central bay, with a window above on each floor. The first and second floors have windows in each bay.

The northeast (rear) elevation is irregularly fenestrated. It has a part-glazed door with a blocked fanlight at ground level in the central bay, with a window above on each floor. There are windows in each floor of the bays to the right, and a window at ground and first floor in the bay to the left of centre. The outer right bay features a boarded door at ground level with a window above on each floor.

On the southeast (side) elevation, there is an attic window set to the right of centre, with a gablehead stack above.

The building features 2-pane timber sash and case windows, which are evenly disposed, along with small rooflights on the southwest pitch. The roof is covered with grey slate on the southwest pitch and has a banded grey slate roof on the northeast pitch, with a stone ridge, stone skews, plain stone skewputts, and harled, coped gablehead stacks on the southeast and northwest. The building predominantly has uPVC rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
