Description
The Customs House, located at 33 Albert Street in Kirkwall, dates from around 1830. This two-storey and attic building features a narrow design with a piended roof, an attic window that breaks the eaves, and a flagpole positioned on the right side. It is adjacent to Number 31 Albert Street, which is listed separately. The exterior is finished in painted cement render with plain painted margins around the windows and strip quoins.
On the principal elevation (east), there is a pilastered and corniced doorpiece in the right bay at ground level, with a painted inscription reading 'Custom House' on the frieze. The entrance features a deep-set, timber-panelled door topped with a rectangular fanlight. Above this door, there is a window on the first floor. The left bay has a window on each floor. A central dormer window is situated above, flanked by the painted Royal Arms of Scotland.
The side elevation (south) includes a window at ground level in the central bay and a tall stair window above that is not aligned with the ground window. There is also a window in the right bay at ground level and a narrow window in the left bay. The building has slightly advanced, full-height wallhead stacks on either side.
The rear elevation (west) features a projection spanning the bays at ground level, with a window in each bay on the first floor and a centrally located dormer window above.
The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate piended roof, piended dormer windows, and tall, corniced wallhead stacks on the south side. It also has bracketed uPVC gutters and cast-iron downpipes.
The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1998. The boundary walls and railings consist of low cement-rendered and lined walls with spear-headed cast-iron railings and similar gates that have a downswept top rail.
