43 Albert Street, Kirkwall

43 Albert Street in Kirkwall is a late 17th century, two-storey, two-bay L-plan house. It features a basket-arched pend leading to a rear courtyard and is adjacent to another rectangular-plan house, also numbered 43, which together form the southwest side of the main courtyard that opens onto Albert Street. The exterior is constructed of harl-pointed rubble with painted ashlar dressings. The windows have plain margins, while the door is framed with a moulded architrave.

On the northeast (principal) elevation, there is a modern timber door at ground level in the right bay, with a window above it on the first floor. The left bay has a window on each floor. A relieving arch is located over the pend entrance on the outer left.

The southeast (side) elevation is two bays wide. It has a window at ground level in the left bay, with a relieving arch over the pend entrance in the same bay. There is a window on each floor above, and a gablehead stack is present.

The house features 2-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and a rubble gablehead stack on the southeast with a harled extension. The rainwater goods are predominantly cast-iron. The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
