Description

22 North End Road in Stromness is a house built in the late 19th century, with later alterations. It is a two-storey building with a basement and has a symmetrical, three-bay rectangular plan. The house is constructed of harl-pointed rubble, featuring ashlar cills and lintels, and has a corniced eaves course. The ground slopes down to the rear.

The west elevation, which is the principal front, has a path leading to a timber panelled door with a rectangular fanlight located in the central bay. Above this, there are paired windows on the first floor. Each bay on this elevation has a window at both the ground and first floors.

On the east elevation, which is the rear, there is a window between the basement and ground floor in the central bay, with a stair window above it. To the left, there is a small-pane glazed door at the basement level, and a window at each floor above. The bay to the right also has a window at each floor.

The north side elevation consists of a single bay with a centrally placed window at the ground level and a gablehead stack above. The south side elevation has two bays; there is a window in the basement on the left, and a window at ground level above it. The right bay also has a window at ground level, with a gablehead stack above.

The house features uPVC windows, small rooflights on the east pitch, and a grey slate roof with a stone ridge. It has corniced gablehead stacks, concrete skews, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 1997.

The property includes square-plan, coped concrete gatepiers at the northwest angle, with wrought-iron railings along the west elevation. A rubble, coped wall encloses a rectangular-plan garden to the southeast.

There is also an outbuilding, which is a rectangular-plan rubble shed situated at right angles to the main house. It has a window on the east gable and features a grey slate roof with a stone ridge and concrete skews.
