Description

30 John Street in Stromness is a house built in the late 18th to early 19th century, with some later alterations. It is a 2-storey and attic structure with a rectangular plan and an asymmetrical crowstepped gable. The house has four bays and is harled with concrete cills.

On the west (principal) elevation, there is a deep-set modern uPVC door with a window on either side at ground level, and a window above the door on the first floor. To the left, there is a window at ground level with a non-aligned window above it on the first floor. The right side has a window on the first floor, and there is another window at ground level on the outer right bay.

The south (side) elevation features a crowstepped wall with two bays. There is a window at ground level with an attic window above it on the left, and another attic window to the right, with a gablehead stack above.

The east (rear) elevation is regularly arranged with three bays and has a single-storey porch in the center. There is a self-contained crowstep-gabled house adjoining the porch at right angles.

The house has modern timber-framed windows with top-hung upper lights, a grey slate roof with a stone ridge, and two evenly spaced rooflights on the east pitch. The north gable has a concrete skew, and there are harled, corniced gablehead stacks on both the north and south sides, along with uPVC rainwater goods.
