Description
61 and 63 John Street in Stromness is a house from the earlier to mid 19th century that has undergone later alterations and additions. It is a 2-storey and attic, 3-bay, L-plan near-symmetrical structure. The ground floor has been converted into a shop, and there are additional L-plan outbuildings to the north that create a courtyard to the right.
The principal elevation features a stone step leading to a modern timber door with a letterbox fanlight, located in the central bay of the ground floor. Above this door, there is a window on the first floor. Each of the flanking bays also has a window on both floors.
The shop entrance elevation is irregular with five bays arranged in a 2-2-1 grouping. The central two bays include a modern glazed shop door on the left and a window on the right at each floor. To the left, there is a slightly advanced two-bay gabled group, which has a modern glazed shop door at ground level and a window on each floor to the right, with a gablehead stack above. There is also a single-storey, single-bay section with a modern part-glazed timber door on the outer right.
The outbuildings to the north are single-storey, flat-roofed L-plan stores, featuring modern timber sliding and part-glazed doors. The windows are modern 2-pane timber sash and case types, along with a fixed timber-framed shop window. The roof is made of grey asbestos, with roof lights on the eastern pitch and harled corniced gablehead stacks on the north, south, and west sides. The rainwater goods are made of uPVC.
Inside, the ground floor is fitted as a modern butcher's and grocery shop (number 63), while the first floor (number 61) and the rear were not seen during the 1997 inspection.
